What is .tr?
.tr is the country-code top-level domain of Türkiye. For three decades it was administered by nic.tr at Middle East Technical University (METU). In September 2022 operation moved to TRABİS, the registry system run by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK). Under TRABİS, registrations are made through accredited registrars (called KK, Kayıt Kuruluşu) instead of directly with the registry.
Who can register it
Most registrations sit under second-level zones. Since TRABİS went live, zones such as .com.tr, .net.tr, .org.tr, .gen.tr and .web.tr are allocated without documents, first come, first served. Zones such as .gov.tr, .edu.tr, .k12.tr, .av.tr and .dr.tr still require documents proving eligibility. Disputes are handled by dispute resolution service providers rather than by the registry.
WHOIS, RDAP and privacy
.tr is not listed in the IANA RDAP bootstrap file dated 2026-09-16, so no public RDAP service is announced for it. OrbitProbe falls back to the classic port-43 WHOIS server (whois.trabis.gov.tr). WHOIS output is free text in a registry-specific layout, so only a fixed set of fields is read (registrar, dates, status, nameservers) and some of them may simply not be present. For ccTLDs, what is published is decided by the registry and local law rather than by ICANN, so output differs from one extension to the next. Most registries do not show the personal data of individuals in public output. OrbitProbe only ever shows the organisation name and country.
